- Reviewed in the United States on May 27, 2010If you enjoy the story behind Survivor and Eco-Challenge, which I do, this is a great book. Mark Burnett was and still is a visionary and his story is motivational for all walks of life. I am a "superfan" of Survivor and reading this book made me a "superfan" of Mark Burnett.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2011Below is Mark's philosophy, and this book is the story of how he lived his success:
1.) Only results count
2.) Have the courage to fail
3.) Choose teammates wisely
4.) Perseverance produces character
5.) Be right or be wrong, but make a decision
6.) Set achievable goals
7.) Try to go above, beyond, and then even further.
Mark writes how his life didn't go as planned, and while he received some big breaks, they were more about positioning himself to receive them and make them happen than simply luck. If he wasn't willing to try anything, he'd have let opportunities pass.
It's a good read. The man was a soldier, a nanny, a t-shirt seller, an insurance agent, a credit card banker, a three times competitor in the Raid Gauloises, the producer and scouter for the Eco-Challenge race, and finally the mastermind behind Survivor. He's accomplished a great deal, and if you don't care about the philosophy, the stories are still interesting.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 5, 2013Mark Burnett holds nothing back as he dares you to go after your dreams. If others don't like your dream, ignore them, If someone says NO, find the person who will say YES! Very inspiring!!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 2, 2013Thanks for another view of Mark Burnett
It was an easy read especially for a non reader as myself.
It kept my interest
- Reviewed in the United States on January 19, 2009A book about Mark Burnett - how he started from zero to a super successful reality TV show producer. A inspiration Book for business starters. If you want to start a business, if you want to realize your American dream, you should read this book. I feel vry lucky to live in America as the possibilities in one's life are endless. Read this book. It will give you inspiration to start your own business venture and to be successful!!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 4, 2009I picked up "Dare to Succeed: How to Survive and Thrive in the Game of Life" by Mark Burnett because I've enjoyed some of his TV shows. I am especially an "Apprentice" fan, liking both Donald Trump and anything business related.
I found this book to be a quick enjoyable read. I learned some things about Burnett that I had not known, and I found it interesting to learn about his background and how he came to the United States and then came up with the ideas for his television shows and saw those ideas through.
It is easy enough to say Mark Burnett is a television genius. His shows have become hugely popular, and the result has been to catapult Burnett into riches and stardom. As one of the hottest producers in television, it seems that what Burnett touches turns to gold. Well, not always, while I liked "The Contender" it did not seem to do as well as some of his others. Still, Burnett has made a mark on television and will most likely continue to do so for quite some time. It is a long ways from selling T-shirts on the beach in Southern California. It was interesting to learn of Burnett being a nanny and then selling shirts on the beach. His shows might not have become the huge successes they are without a burning determination Burnett possessed to make his inspiration become reality. (pun intended)
As a former paratrooper myself, maybe I just enjoy seeing former service members succeed. Maybe it is because I've enjoyed watching "The Apprentice" and "Survivor." Maybe I just enjoy success stories. Whatever the reason, I enjoyed this book, and think anyone who enjoys Burnett's television shows will too. It is a good tale of how someone with a lot of determination can make his vision come true. It is an easy read, and one that will not only share some of Burnett's life story with you, but maybe motivate you to pursue your dreams a little harder as well. If it does that, it definitely deserves a read.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 26, 2004I happened to pick up the audio cassette of this book from the library and although its an abridged version I really loved listening to it. The story of Burnett's trials and tribulations and also his rise from rags to riches is told in a very interesting manner. The Survivor/eco Challenge story is really thrilling and Burnett's talent and perseverance in creating these shows is inspiring. The book has some great anecdotes and is replete with memorizable pearls of wisdom for the ambitious soul. The things which stick out most is his courage and determination to succeed. However I feel that the words eco challenge and survivor has been over used in this book and becomes too banal after a point although overall this book should be a good buy.
